Since MultiText closed down, which is a damn shame. JSMS is out, it is made by Finbarr Brady. Who worked on Multitext. It is a much better application considering it is cross platform! Thats right, it works on Windows, Linux and Mac. All you need is the latest version of Java. Really anything above 1.5 . Screenshot of the interface here:
As you can see its lovely and simple! It has some great features as well, for instance if you put your mouse over the message count it will show you the last message you sent, group texting and auto downloading of your contacts from Meteor/O2/Vodafone website. The fact that it is cross platform really sells it to me, aswell as it being Open source! I’m running it under Ubuntu at the moment and not a single issue! Everyone should head over and get it, give those websites a break, they are too slow to load anyway!
Starting off early this morning I have another gem for you! OSWD, Open Source Web Design. Another website which offers free open source design. At the time of writing Open Source Web Design has 2080 free designs! The project has been around since 2000 and is a steadily growing community! For those of you who are designers and wish to promote your work, this is definately a good place and for the people who hate designing or just don’t want to start with a blank canvas this is a great resource! I recommend that everyone checks it out, there really is some nice designs in there!
So I went ahead and installed Kubuntu this evening. Basically the KDE version of Ubuntu, which obviously uses the KDE desktop instead of GNOME. Having started on GNOME I’m much more used to it, but I figure I’ll give KDE a week or so before deciding which I really want to go with, at the moment I’m finding KDE confusing and just plain wierd in comparisson to GNOME. But who knows, maybe after a week I’ll rather KDE! Only way to know is to try it I guess.. So heres for a productive week!
For people who have Ubuntu and want to try out Kubuntu open a terminal and type:
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
Yep! Easy as that, then just logout, click the options menu and pick session. Then KDE. You should probably restart your computer too so you get the lovely Kubuntu login screen! Don’t worry, you can change it back to the Ubuntu login screen by setting GNOME as your default desktop session! Its as easy as stealing candy from a baby!
Well to kick things off for this Sunday I’d like to start first with the trailer for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!
Next up is the “OpenMoko” this will be in my opinion the “iPhone Killer” not only NOT being locked to any network but running linux! Its definately the one I’ll be buying anyway!
Next up, the trailer for the Simpsons movie! Have to say its looking good, definately one to see!
And lastly we have the Bumptop 3D Desktop Prototype. This looks like an amazing piece of technology which I would love to see intergrated into my Ubuntu!
Ok, new little post I’m going to have is “Saturday Links”. This will be every Saturday and will contain a couple of fun / interesting links.
