Today I got the chance to get a quick interview with Finbarr Brady, for those of you who don’t know Finbarr he is the creator and head developer of jSMS. jSMS is a program that allows you to use your available free webtexts from a program on your computer, no more slow loading of that website!
What inspired you to make jSMS?
I’ve been with Meteor a few years now and I used to send a lot of webtexts. Meteors website can be very slow and hard to use. I also don’t like logging in each time. So I put together JSMS (selfishly) for myself to quickly send texts. It was only after a few months people started asking me for it so I put a bit of time into hosting it on a free Google Pages site for all to download.
Did you plan to make it cross-platform or do that afterwards?
I wanted that from the start. I used Mac OS X at home, Ubuntu, Windows & Solaris in the office so I wanted to be able to use this all over the place. Java seemed to be the best way to do this, plus I have been using Java for a while so it was the natural way to do it.
Have you planned any new features for jSMS when you get back from holidays?
My friend, Keith Flynn, is also developing on JSMS now and has added a couple of features such as password encryption. Keith has a few ideas on how to make JSMS better.I won’t be back in Ireland until late 2008 so I will get back into it then.
Some of the features will be:
- The option to have a ‘Send’ button. (allowing the user to use carriage return)
- Allow the option for non-alphabetical phone book sort
It would also be nice to get JSMS turned into a dashboard widget in OSX or a plugin for Firefox (or an application for iPhone would be sweet).
Intending on making any more software for public use?
Not at the minute, traveling the world! Maybe when I get back.
How long did jSMS take to make?
It took only a few hours to get it to send texts, but it took a good few more hours to add a GUI, then maintain it and to add new features. I learned a lot from this project though such as automating builds with ANT and creating binaries for different OS’s. It was also my first time to work on an open source project and it was good to learn how to work with version control systems (subversion) outside of my work environment.
jSMS which I previously talked about previously over here, is available at Finbarr’s website here!
Digg it!
