So after Tom mentioned ‘Windows Live Writer’ over here, I’ve been meaning to try it for a while, on Monday I installed it, making sure not to automatically set my default search engine and what not, overall a fast install and I got the new version of Windows Live Messenger too! Magic hey?

Overall I think its a brilliant blogging platform, having set it up to auto upload images I insert into a post, my only issue with it now is that it has no support for Wordpress tags, if I modify the Insert Tags.. feature to make it use tags from my website it just shoves them in the bottom and actually doesn’t add them into the database at all! Which means when blogging using this I have to write here, publish then go into my Admin CP edit and add tags. Very pointless! So Windows, the faster you bring out either a plugin or a newer version that can use Wordpress tags, I’m afraid I will not be using you! :(

Blogrush - Traffic to your blog..

BlogRush
Just reading about Blogrush [referal link] now and decided I will give it a whirl, unlike other traffic generating programs, it takes no work, no money, and apparently provides a nice amount of traffic, [we will see about that]. Almost seems to good to be true hey? Apparently for every 100 visitors to your blog, you’d get 100 views on a widget on a blog of the genre you choose for your blog. Interesting stuff. Then the whole referal’s thing kicks in where you get whatever their visitor amount is ontop of your views.. A long chain of people would therefore be insane. We should set up a really long Irish Bloggers link! :)

My Blogging Workspace

My Blogging Workspace

Well since there was so much response to ProBlogger’s “Blog Workspaces” I figured I’d post my own Blogging Workspace. So there you have it;

  • One Dell Dimension 3100 [Running Ubuntu with a partition of Fedora Core]
  • One Chair! You need to sit you know! ;)
  • One Printer, Samsung = Cheap. But I’m on a budget so who cares!
  • Loads of PC Plus Magazines and Linux Magazine’s thanks to John Reid.
  • Red Hat Linux Bible, again thanks to John Reid, shame he doesn’t have a website I can give link love to!
  • Lastly, one Creative sound system! Because blogging without music just isn’t fun!

Are you an impulsive blogger?

Impulsive Blogger

Lately I’ve found my posting schedule just not working out, one day I’ll have four or five posts, the next maybe one, possibly none! The problem? I impulsively blog. Whatever hits my head, whenever, wherever! Sure thats great normally, but then there are days where I just can’t think of what to blog about and I’m left stranded, literally pulling a post out of myself! It takes the joys out of it! I’ve heard of people talk about how bad impulsive blogging is and always thought “Well sure, but most of my topics need to be impulsive” with them being news and other on the moment stuff. But honestly it isn’t really good enough, I never have a “Back Up” plan! It’s interesting sometimes, even kinda funny! But how to change? Sure I’ve read tips about making lists for your off days! Lists aren’t me! So therefore I’ve come up with a new one, from now on. Thats right, starting today. I’m going to try have one software or website review a day. If you don’t see one, I’ve failed and I’m back to impulsively blogging. All this thinking made me think though, are you an impulsive blogger? If so how do you “cope” with days that you can’t really think of what to blog about? Please let me know! I’d love to hear from you!

Time for a Second Blog!

PHP Code
So I’ve decided I’m just about ready to start a second blog! I’m planning smaller, and not as big as this one but sure we’ll see how it goes. Basically whats sparked this idea is the fact that sometime around the 13th of July I’m going to start coding my game again. The code that its using at the moment is about a year old, from when I started coding in PHP. Therefore it needs a total revamp and having just looked at it! It’s better to just re-start the whole thing! So I’m going to do a blog to go along with it, really simple post by post of how to make your own game. All the code and everything, then when I’m finished the code will be open source and free to use! Hopefully from there people will point out security flaws that I have done and I can go into the more advanced topics of fixing it and upgrading it. Constantly working on it. I feel like this would be a good resource as I have not seen a blog of this topic yet! The game will be based in PHP, obviously to play online and will be text based! *Raises Glass* So here’s to the second blog, hopefully it works out to plan! Now to find a domain name! :)

Blog Explosion is Ridiculous!

Blog Explosion

I just thought that I’d do a post on Blog Explosion, who I’m not very happy at right now. On July 19th I registered my blog on Blog Explosion, I have been a member of Blog Explosion for over a year now, finding it a great way to drive a bit of traffic to my blogs, and gain readership. However I think Blog Explosion has gone really down hill. Firstly they haven’t verified my blog, its been on there for two weeks now! I emailed them three days ago about it and still no response, normally I wouldn’t be too worried about this, but at the moment its the point that I have money to buy credits with for the blog, so I want it verified as soon as possible. The website is going downhill, some of the games on it including “Blog Tycoon” have been broken for at least two weeks, and they just do not seem to care, as well as that when I tried to send my email the first time through their contact form [because thats the only way] it refused my email at least four times, leaving it I went back to it the next day, same message, same email. It accepted it! Blog Explosion just do not seem to be putting effort into;
1. Satisfying new customers and
2. Developing their website.
Since I originally joined, the layout hasn’t changed, nothing has been added, nothing has changed! In fact, when I originally joined, it was better! At least they verified my blog within a day or two. If companies like Blog Explosion expect people to either use their website to generate traffic to their blogs or pay money to generate traffic to their blogs they need to be Re-Developing constantly! They need to make customer service more of a priority and more than anything they just need to shape up! I for one will NOT be using their services now because of this, not because the website is down. But because there is no email back, and I haven’t been verified! Disgraceful!

Fighting Blog Spammers..

Caught Spam

Well, I decided I’d do something interesting today and setup a Page of Shame, listing all the IP’s of those who try or do spam me! This is of course to match the new Comment Policy, that none of your regular readers don’t have to worry about at all! Anyway, no sooner had I put up the Comment Policy and was thinking about what I should put in the Page of Shame as a place holder than two spam comments got caught by Askimet! So two IP’s up there for people to enjoy! Interesting and fun way to handle spam hey? ;) Comments on what people think of this idea would be appreciated!

Blogging at weekends?

Do you find it harder to blog at the weekends? I certaintly do! I don’t know what it is.. I spend nearly three times as long looking for something to post about at the weekends in comparission to weekdays! Its just something strange that I was thinking of, I can’t flow things off as easily! I find it much harder and it isn’t even a time constraint thing as I have more time at weekends and try to devote more time to the blog! Other bloggers, do you find it hard to blog at weekends and if so what do you do to keep the flow going? Let me know!

  1. Free Blogging Series - Part One
  2. Free Blogging Series - Part Two

Blogger

Moving on with the series [sorry for the delay] I will be showing you the joys of Blogger today! Listen up, and listen good! ;)

Overview:
Free Subdomain. http://yourname.blogspot.com
Free Ability to use Custom Domain. Once you have purchased it.
Abilty to set up Feed Redirection to FeedBurner.
Ability to publish to blog via email.
Ability to allow an unlimted amount of people to privately access your blog.
Ability to edit template.
16 Different Templates in a range of colours.
Ability to Upload Pictures.
Ability for Word Verfication on Comments, stopping spam.

Thoughts:
Blogger provides all the nuts and blots you need to run a basic to intermediate blog, all for free. The real letdown for Blogger though is the low amount of themes it has. Other than that I don’t have any complaints. You really do have to mess around with your theme alot to get it looking individual and even then.. lets just say its hard! Another complaint of mine on Blogger was that it didn’t have the ability for feed redirection, but it actually just enabled that there over the last week or two, so no complaints on that side! With the html of your template being editable you will also have no problems with blogger if wanting to enable meebo or flickr!

Overall:
A fantastic blogging system that really does allow anyone to blog in the simpliest of ways but lets the intermidate bloggers step their blog up a notch! It really has progressed since I first used it! A definate reccomendation! Even if you do want to change to a paid blog after this its as simple as clicking a few steps on import! Definatly keep Blogger in mind if your thinking of setting up a blog!
