88 miles

Since last night I’ve been looking for some simple program to just track how much time I am spending on projects I downloaded quiet a few applications as I really wanted one that wasn’t web based but none of them came close to being as good as 88 miles!  This website allows you to add company’s and projects in seconds, so your not wasting time on them and of course then it has a simple clock in clock off interface for each project. Needless to say these guys have got it right and aren’t making you waste any time doing this and that just so you can check how much time your wasting! ;)

Definitely recommend it! Check it out at 88miles.net ..

Windows Live Writer 2008

Windows Live Writer is out of beta and into “Windows Live Writer 2008“. No really amazing new features apart from easier Windows Live Spaces creation. Hopefully some interesting plugins will come out for it on the Wordpress side now! Overall I’m doing all my blogging from Windows Live Writer so I’m happy to see this, who would have known I liked blogging from a program more than the Admin Control Panel! :)

JSMS 2.3 Released

jsms

Version 3.2 has now been released and you can download it here! Have to say I’m really impressed with Finbarr and the team on this release. I previously interviewed Finbarr Brady which you can read here, however on to what this release contains!

  • A Send button - Works a charm, now when I click enter by mistake a message doesn’t send, unless of course I want it to then I can re-enable it in JSMSPreferences.
  • Support for Section Dividers in Phone Book - You can now add little micro groups like “Friends” “Work” etc. and your numbers will be organized through this!
  • Menubar - Now we have Copy/Cut/Paste options for those of you who don’t know the control keys off by heart! A tools menu, for managing the phone book and what not! And a help menu!
  • Lastly, Update Checker - JSMS will now silently check if new releases are available! Handy to say the least! Updates can also be forced manually!

So go download it! Alot of work has obviously been put into this release, the only thing I feel JSMS needs now is a graphical phone book editor, instead of having to do everything via Notepad!

FeedDemon - RSS Reader

feeddemon

Recently I have been using the trial version of “FeedDemon” and I have to say I’m quiet happy with the features, before that I was using “FeedReader” which had some weird flaws like scrolling over to the right automatically if I pressed down to read the next item! Aswell as not being able to mark items as important and just generally having to stick with reading full view content. However FeedDemon allows you to choose how you would like to read your feeds, from just titles, to summaries to full posts! Brilliantly made and certainly helps reading 36 blogs in a couple of minutes!

kdesvn - A linux SVN client

Kdesvn

One thing I noticed linux does not have, is a decent SVN client without you having to go through loads of terminal! That is until I found kdesvn! Don’t worry GNOME users, it works on GNOME perfectly fine! The project website is over here, or for Ubuntu users:

sudo apt-get install kdesvn

Could it get any simplier than that? The features, anything you expect of a standard SVN client, without all the dazzle effects!

Wordpress - Windows Live Writer Update

windowslivewriter

Well I’m much happier now as I am once again writing this from Windows Writer, do I have to go edit tags now? Nope! You know why? Because Wordpress have released a Windows Live Manifest file so that Windows Live will recognise that your blog has tagging enabled! You can get this over here. All you have to do is:

  • Download and extract files.
  • Upload wlwmanifest.xml to /
  • Upload \wp-includes\images to /wp-includes/images
  • Close and open Windows Writer, then press Weblog, Edit Weblog Settings, Editing, Update Style

Presto! You have “Keywords” which are basically tags, press F2 to bring up the menu to insert Tags[keywords] publish your post, and your off in a hack!

Special thanks to Joe Cheng for being the first to point this out to me!

Windows Live Writer

[Click for full size image]

So after Tom mentioned ‘Windows Live Writer’ over here, I’ve been meaning to try it for a while, on Monday I installed it, making sure not to automatically set my default search engine and what not, overall a fast install and I got the new version of Windows Live Messenger too! Magic hey?

Overall I think its a brilliant blogging platform, having set it up to auto upload images I insert into a post, my only issue with it now is that it has no support for Wordpress tags, if I modify the Insert Tags.. feature to make it use tags from my website it just shoves them in the bottom and actually doesn’t add them into the database at all! Which means when blogging using this I have to write here, publish then go into my Admin CP edit and add tags. Very pointless! So Windows, the faster you bring out either a plugin or a newer version that can use Wordpress tags, I’m afraid I will not be using you! :(

FireAnt - Internet Television

An interesting service I’m only learning of now is FireAnt, which is basically Internet television. They have a huge amount of channels already:

FireAnt has 22,353 channels and 1,322,794 episodes, and adding more each day!

Looks like a good service hey? But not only that, if this becomes more popular [and it is legal] will standard TV stations broadcast through this? BBC are currently using it for a few channels as well as Sky News. I’d like to see some popular series start to use this, there is no reason why they couldn’t make money from advertising still. Target the new generation, most of the young - middle aged people now spend more time online than watching TV. Of course another positive point for this is people would down TV Series from Bittorrent…less! Certainly one to watch, then again it could hit the deadpool before any of that happens, out of interest does anyone use FireAnt on a consistent basis? More importantly, what do you personally think standard TV Stations would take up on this?
