Invention: The Internet
The Internet
Science week are having a great blogging competition, so thanks to being notified to Damien Mulley I figured I might aswell participate!
My Favorite Invention from my childhood: The Internet
The Internet was created back in 1983, seven years before I was born! Growing up I always had access to the internet and it consumed vast amounts of my time, starting with “The Computer Training Center” in Thurles, Co. Tipperary that was run by my mother. Obviously I have more than surpassed the old PITMAN qualification. The Internet has to be my favorite invention and even today it still is!
One billion people use the regularly use the internet, from its origins as ARPAnet [Advanced Research Projects Agency network), a US military network it is now a worldwide communication and money making device. The first use of TCP/IP happened in 1983. The Internet is basically a worldwide, publically accessible series of interconnected computer networks! Of course where would the internet be without domain names and ip’s? And that’s where ICANN comes into play (”Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers”) a globally unified namespace (i.e., a system of names in which there is one and only one holder of each name) is essential for the Internet to function.
Of course we have progressed way more now, with the Internet as a major factor in not only work, but in mobiles, VOIP, file sharing and email. The internet is improving in certain aspects each day and it’s another reason it’s my favorite invention, it never gets boring!
