So it didn’t take me long to want to upgrade hey? Here’s a quick overview of what I did:

  • Backed up my WordPress database.
  • Backed up my theme and plugins.
  • Downloaded version WordPress 2.3, get it here if your wondering.
  • Deleted everything associated to WordPress apart from .htaccess, /images/ and wp-config.php
  • Uploaded the files.
  • Ran the Wordpress database upgrade.
  • Database was fine, no issues.
  • Spent about half an hour getting the new supported version of k2 back to normality.
  • All plugins work fine, SocialBookmarkButtons, Feedburner Feedsmith, Live Post Preview, WWSGD, Wp-Mint, Subscribe to comments and Askimet :P
  • Problems posting, just hundreds of errors, converting all categories to tags.
  • Turns out Extended Live Archives were causing the problem. Problem sorted.

All in all, a perfect trouble free installation! :)

Other than that I added gravatar support! Removed Categories, everything is changed to tags now. Enjoy! I know I will!

Side Note: If anyone wants any help with their Wordpress upgrade please give me a shout! Or if you just want to know if a certain theme or plugin works drop me a comment!

Servage.net unveil new Webmail!

Servage Roundcube Beta
Today my hosting company Servage.net unveiled a new Webmail feature! Instead of just Squirrel Mail, I now have the option [’if using webmail’] to use Roundcube Beta! For anyone who doesn’t know what Roundcube is:

RoundCube Webmail is a browser-based multilingual IMAP client with an application-like user interface providing full functionality like MIME support, contacts and filters. It is written in PHP with MySQL and implements web standards such as XHTML and CSS

Or in plain English, its Ajaxy and handy! ;) Overall it’s been implemented very nicely and its something I’d love to see another few hosts add! Blackknight, pay heed it’d be a cool feature to get you ahead of the crowd! The project page is here.

Blogrush - Traffic to your blog..

BlogRush
Just reading about Blogrush [referal link] now and decided I will give it a whirl, unlike other traffic generating programs, it takes no work, no money, and apparently provides a nice amount of traffic, [we will see about that]. Almost seems to good to be true hey? Apparently for every 100 visitors to your blog, you’d get 100 views on a widget on a blog of the genre you choose for your blog. Interesting stuff. Then the whole referal’s thing kicks in where you get whatever their visitor amount is ontop of your views.. A long chain of people would therefore be insane. We should set up a really long Irish Bloggers link! :)

Adverts - Only for the web illiterate

Google Adverts
Damien had a brilliant post about adverts on his blog today, read it here! I aggree with the majority of his points and it made me consider why I want ad’s on my blog! Honestly, I aim my ad’s for what I see as the “dim-witted” users of the internet, as I figure they are the “users” who would click ad’s the most. Stop looking at me like that, I’m right! I’m not going to click an ad on a website/blog going “oooh nice link”.
But anyway, its seems I don’t have enough “dim-witted” users on the blog. As I have only made $0.56 or maybe its the fact that you have to shove the ad in the “dim-witted” users face for it to work and I don’t really feel like changing my design! So until web advertising actually become relevant, or my hosting goes up and it looks like I’ll actually need to try support it via adverts, ADVERTS REVOKED. See, wasn’t that easy? ;)

Laptops in schools?

Laptop
Overview:
I was just thinking there on the idea of replacing school books with laptops, has any school actually gone and done this yet? At the moment in Secondary School prices for books are above €200 per year. If you could get a laptop for €400, wouldn’t that be worth it? You wouldn’t have to buy books then! Ok true, a laptop doesn’t work as a book just on its own, but I’m sure the Department of Education could come up with .PDF style books. I suppose there is reasons for and against this plan.

For:

  • Cheaper Overall.
  • Students become more computer literate.
  • Less weight for students to be carrying around.
  • More Enviormentally Friendly
  • .

Against:

  • Computers “could” theoritically just be a distraction to learning.
  • Its harder to study of a computer than a book, example: glare.
  • Students starting of using computers would find them hard and it would in overall slow down learning.

Conclusion
Of course they are just my opinions, I’m sure there is far more reasons than this. I’d be very interested to hear of any case studies done on the subject or just others opinions, are you for or aginst them!

Adverts are here!

Google Advert
Thats the one! The stats got abit more respectable and its now possibly worthwile to shove a few ad’s up! Of course I don’t want to annoy you guys, the RSS feed is ad free and there will be very little noticable adverts unless you go back through old posts or come into the website from a search. This is because my main target audience for these adverts are people ariving from searches. Cool hey? ;) People let me know what you think. Did you even notice the adverts?
