1. Emesene, an MSN alternitve for Linux, not as intrusive as Windows Live Messenger or MSN..
2. Desktop effects, I don’t care how childish it sounds, seeing my desktop rotate like a cube amazes me!
3. Multiple Desktops, extreemly handy I can be browsing in one, installing something in the 2nd, coding in the 3rd and still have the 4th desktop free! Of course I can add more than four desktops too!
4. Startup, I rarely ever turn off my computer, its usually just logged out, one thing I will not be missing about Windows is how the system starts to slow down if its been on too long. Also, my computer being in my room Windows makes a hell of alot more noise physically with the computer than Ubuntu does.. However when I do decide to restart Ubuntu its extreemly fast!
5. Programs crashing, this has only happened to me twice on Ubuntu so far, twice as in I was physically trying to crash the machine to see what would happen. The first time under firefox, firefox just shaded out, and tried to fix itself, when I pressed the close button on firefox it simply asked me if i’d like to end the process, one click and firefox was gone.. No lagging like in windows, or having to go to task manager.. The 2nd time was under Wine, I was trying to install Dreamweaver, somewhere during the installation it crashed, and became extreemly unresponsive, however, it didn’t lock up the system, it was just the window itself, the window was able to be moved over to a desktop I wasn’t using and didn’t interfere with anything while I was figuring out how to stop it. Next love of mine for ubuntu which fixed this was KILL PROCESS!
Something about this, just asks you if your sure, and then BANG process gone. Love it, no more crashed programs for me… Of course end process is always better to do first.
6. Security, something about browsing the web on linux makes me feel more secure, virus’s are not really something I have to think about 24/7. Phising and Spyware I still do think about though!
7. Wine, because of this beauty of a program, I now have Dreamweaver 8 working, something that made me not fully change to linux before.
8. The thought of not having to buy Vista or go through one of those upgrades where you have to boot a cd to upgrade the OS. Nope, I can do that all through Software Updater now. Update Ubuntu to the latest package while still using my machine.
9. Add/Remove, not having to go searching for programs on different websites, you browse through, find the ones you want, or search for them, if you know the names. Click them, apply, let the packages download.. [only takes a few minutes] and you have all the software you want! Find you don’t want it later? Go back in and uncheck the box. Presto!
10. No Blue Screen of Death. Enough said?
11. Free Software, kinda makes things handier..
12. There isn’t anything I use on Windows anymore, that linux don’t have a perfectly good alternitive for, or can get that program working under Wine.
So Microsoft and Windows, I’m afraid thats it for you and me.. It was good, but it just didn’t work out! I found someone new, Ubuntu Linux.
Digg it!
